[08.01.09][trans] Brokore - Dongwan: Shinhwa runs in my blood, I want to keep singing

Kim Dongwan, a member of Shinhwa, Korea's No. 1 group - who will be celebrating their 10th anniversary this coming March - held his solo fanmeeting on 11 Dec after the Shinhwa concert in Tokyo. After the fanmeeting, Dongwan kindly did an interview with us.

Dongwan only slept 1 hour as he was nervous about the fanmeeting, and when we asked him "Is it ok to ask a few questions?", he replied "I'm almost dying" with a warm smile on his face.

Q: You're the only Shinhwa member to have a solo fanclub, is that right?DW: You can say that, but the other members had their own solo concerts too. I want to have a solo concert, but I haven't had the time to prepare for one.

Q: You sang a lot of ballads in your solo album.
DW: I said it during the fanmeeting too, I appreciate natural voices, without any additional sounds from machines. I watched this Irish movie called "Once" in Korea, and totally agree that music is also a language in itself. I'd like to produce an album that has the function of a language.

Q: And that is the reason behind your solo efforts?
DW: That's a different desire from the desire I have when I'm part of Shinhwa. There are always differences in terms of music and the way I express my music when I work on my solo or with Shinhwa

Q: What about your acting activities?
DW: Right now I'm in a situation where I'm short of materials. I often need to meet all kinds of people, drink, fall in love, quarrel, in order to be able to act, but I'm not in this state of mind at all right now.

Q: How was today's fanmeeting?
DW: The atmosphere was great, but it was a pity that I was so nervous and made many mistakes. There was a letter from a fan that wrote, "Although why that person is sad has nothing to do with me, but he saved me." I should work even harder after hearing that.

Q: You played "If I Ain't Got You" on the piano today, do you intend to release any piano recordings?
DW: I'm not at that level yet, but I'd like to work hard in this area, and start writing songs too.

Q: You talked about living in Japan for half a year after your army stint during the fanmeeting just now?
DW: That may still change (laughs). I want to continue learning Japanese, and I think that learning it in Japan will help me to use it more naturally and fluently. Also, I like Japanese movies a lot. When I come to Japan, I will practice my Japanese while going about my performances. If I were to stay in Japan, I probably wouldn't pick Tokyo. I prefer the mountains to the sea. Although I had some unhappy memories when I was climbing Mt Fuji, because it was raining heavily (laughs)

The next part of the interview will be published in Issue 15 of Brokore magazine.

Hyesung, Junjin sign on as highest paid models with fashion brand

Shinhwa's Shin Hyesung and Junjin have been selected as the models for a fashion label that will be breaking into the China market. The two of them will be demonstrating a mix of the androgynous mannish look and the feminine look, a style that is in vogue in Europe right now.

Shin Hyesung and Junjin were selected by Yeshin as the models for their new label "mutishop'Y BY CODES-COMBINE" which will be launched in Shanghai in March. They completed their photo shoot in a studio in Gangnam on 3 January.

Due to Shinhwa's popularity in China, Shin Hyesung and Junjin's endorsement fees thus are reportedly the highest in the market.

A spokesperson from 'Y BY CODES-COMBINE' said, "As representatives of the Hallyu wave, the different personalities and overall marketability of Shin Hyesung and Junjin are very highly rated within the market, this is why we decided to sign them on. We hope to be able to tag on the huge popularity of Hyesung and Junjin in China to attract the younger consumers."

The ads featuring Hyesung and Junjin will be seen in Chinese fashion magazines, on outdoor billboards, in shopping malls and other medium. With the launch of the label in March, the two of them will also be in Shanghai at the same time for fansigning events and other promotional events.

Hyesung and Junjin both expressed, "We're really happy to be the spokespeople for the label, and we feel that all this came about because of the fans' love and support. We will work hard."

Now Hyesung has already completed the promotional activities for his 2nd solo album released last year, and is currently preparing for Shinhwa's 9th album and his 3rd solo album. Junjin has completed the filming of the Chinese drama You Are My Dream, and is also in preparation for Shinhwa's 9th album and his solo album.

[08.01.09][article trans] Eric the fourth-dimensional leader

*this is an article from a Chinese mag called FANS, i think it's probably written by a very devoted fan and it's a really moving tribute to eric... very very well-written... *sniff* this is exactly why i love eric THIS much...

no matter what anyone says, he has got to be THE BEST leader out there...ERIC FIGHTING!*

From a street dance champion in the US to the leader of a Korean idol group, from a singer to an actor, from a Korean celebrity to a Hallyu star, every single transformation of Eric is simply amazing.

No Turning Back at 19 Years Old
From being selected by Lee Soo Man in March 1997 to his debut on 24 March 1998, Eric put in one full year of effort for his debut performance on KMTV's Show Music Tank. But Shinhwa's first album wasn't a success. Eric took on the responsbility of being the leader and big brother, and consoled the other members, "Let's put in our best efforts for the 2nd album, we will continue if we succeed and if we don't, we'll disband." He felt that he had to be strong, forgetting that he too was only 19 years old that year.

Fortunately, their efforts paid off, and they finally had a fanclub of their own - Shinhwa Changjo - and their very first award - the 1998 Mnet Award for Best Male Newcomer. Their 2nd album had succeeded.

Growing Pains
Shinhwa's success extended to their 3rd album. However, Andy returned to the US before the release of the 4th album, and with one person less, the company wanted to disband Shinhwa. The sudden change left Eric feeling lost for a moment. He thought if they made a great job of the 4th album, the company might be willing to give in to them.

But even their passion and results didn't make the company change its mind. Finally, that led to the unforgettable guerilla concert. Then, Eric finally caved in and knelt on the ground. Having bet everything he had on it, he lost the strength to stand. That was the first and last time that we've seen such a helpless Eric.

Leading The Escape
In 2003, Shinhwa refused to extend the contract with SM, which was undoubtedly a shock in the industry. So far no artiste had ever dared to offend the big boss of the Korean entertainment industry, and they were the first.

After the guerilla concert, Eric had his own plans, and Shinhwa left SM among much controversy. Eric was the one who negotiated with the management, and forking out his own funds to buy Shinhwa out. No one will ever know how much hardship he had to endure during the negotiations.

But there was still more trouble to deal with. On 20th September 2004, a reporter openly asked at Shinhwa's 7th album showcase, "What does Shinhwa have to offer to be able to release their 7th album?" and proceeded to slam Shinhwa with ruthless criticism, leading to a big media frenzy. It was then that Eric stepped up once again as the leader to speak out, and he published his rebuttal on the Internet, with the now-famous quote, "It's not so easy to see Shinhwa. If there's anything, you can look for me."

On 9 January 2006, there was a video of Eric and two other members mimicking the intellectually-challenged posted online with the header "Eric's a goner this time". Eric dealt firmly with the media's relentless questioning. In an apology letter which he published online he apologised for the thoughtless behaviour that he and his two younger brothers displayed in the video. What could have been a huge PR crisis for them, Eric resolved it with his firm and sincere actions. The helpless Eric of yesterday who knelt on the ground covering his face was gone - there's now only the Eric who says with conviction "We will put in our best efforts".

The Peculiar Fourth Dimension
He'd catch a mosquito and asked why it was so ugly; he ran away to Jejudo alone because he couldn't come to terms with his sudden popularity; he got lost on the way to Dongwan's birthday party; he'd confide in a dead ant; he spoke of making a pot of Hye-Wan soup....this is the fourth dimension of a man who's cool, calm and confident. To many, he is the leader of Shinhwa, gentlemanly, attractive, usually quiet, and sometimes shy.

To Shinhwa, there is only one Eric.

Male Stars Go to the Military This Year

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia
Staff Reporter

1. Actor Kim Rae-won / 2. Shinhwa’s Eric Mun / 3. Shinhwa’s Kim Dong-wan
4. Singer Eru / 5. Actor Gong Yoo

This year, some of the hottest male stars in Korean entertainment will temporarily leave the spotlight to enter the military as part of the two-year service compulsory for all Korean males.

``Coffee Prince'' star Gong Yoo met with around 1,000 fans in a special meeting Sunday. He asked fans not to worry while he was serving in the military, but became emotional during the event.

Gong's red-hot career will have to be put on hold for the next two years. The actor, who recently gained popularity for his role in the hit MBC drama, will enter the military Jan. 14.

Last week, actor Chun Jeong-myoung, who appeared in the film ``Hansel and Gretel,'' and pop group NRG member No Yoo-min started their military training.

Hallyu stars Zo In-sung, Cho Hyun-jae, Yang Dong-keun, Lee Dong-gun and Kim Rae-won are also expected to enlist this year.

The K-pop music industry will also suffer the temporary loss of Shinhwa members Eric Mun and Kim Dong-wan, singers Eru and Sung Si-kyung, as well as former H.O.T. member Tony An.

As they prepare for the military, many male stars are scrambling to finish shooting TV dramas and movies, hold concerts, release new albums and endorse products.

Zo is filming the historical epic ``Ssanghwajeom'' directed by Yoo Ha, while Kim Rae-won will appear in the TV drama ``Sikgaek.''

Mun and Kim Dong-wan will be the first two Shinhwa members to enter the military. The group's 10th anniversary concert in March was also seen as a ``farewell'' concert because of the members' impending service.

Sung Si-kyung held a concert last December, and is said to be releasing an album before he joins the military in February.

Eru received much attention from the media, after he gave up his American citizenship two years ago. His management agency said Eru, entering the military in the second half of the year, will hold his first solo concert next month.

If these stars are worried fans may forget about them during their two-year absence, they should look at the experiences of male stars returning to the entertainment scene.

Even though actors Song Seung-heon and Jang Hyuk entered the military in 2004 after they were accused of draft dodging, their careers did not seem to have suffered lasting damage.

Jang appeared in last year's hit drama ``Thank You,'' and is currently shooting his first Hollywood film ``Dance of the Dragon.'' Song is filming ``Fate'' with Kwon Sang-woo, which will be released this year, and will soon appear in a TV drama ``The City of God.''

Other actors who are making a comeback after being discharged from the military are Ji Sung and So Ji-sup. Ji Sung is appearing in the MBC medical drama ``New Heart,'' while Suh is still filming the drama ``Cain and Abel.''

On the other hand, Won Bin, who was discharged in 2006 due to an injury, has not announced plans for a film or drama. He only made brief appearances as a UNICEF Ambassador last year.

[08.01.05][news]JunJin performance in 2008 Nanjing Concert

Last night, the South Korean stars concert was staged in Aoti Stadium to celebrate the upcoming Lunar New Year and 2008 Olympic Games. The performers included JunJin, Chinese singer Chen Jianhong and other Korean gasoos.

The highlight spot of the concert was the opening performance of Park JunJin, who greeted the audience with Chinese words " Hello, my name is JunJin". The handsome singer captured fans' heart just by wearing simple black and white suit, along with a bright red scarf.

Instead of a Korean song, JunJin chose to present a classic Chinese song "Friend", which showed his respect for the host country and his Chinese fans. Although his pronounciation was not very skillful, his singing was outstanding, with a full and strong voice. Then, JunJin took a small paper from his pocket and read aloud in Chinese: " Hello Nanjing, I'm JunJin. The 2008 Olympic Games will be held in Beijing. I wish it to be successful!"

The stadium was full of screams from JunJin's fans, showing how much popular he has been in China. The singer also said "You're so beautiful" to some of the audience and other Chinese lines such as "Happy New Year", ect.

[08.01.04] [Diary] Dongwan - Although without Minwoo

I went to the ski park! ^__^V
Ha ah~~How many people are here now..
I haven't been here since 2002
I'm more afraid of the cold than I thought..
Um, Granny's mandoo soup shop, the trout shop, and the only bar here little Izakaya aren't here anymore..
While I haven't changed much at all, the things around me have all changed..
I can feel the passing of time..
I go about my daily chores but.. I'm moody, so I have some warm rice wine everyday sip~ sip~

[08.01.02][article] Farewell to (Bear) Arms (feat. Eric, M, DW)

excerpt 1:
The list includes Cho In Sung, Lee Dong Gun, Cho Hyun Jae and Kim Rae Won, as well as singer-actor Kang Ta and boyband Shinhwa members Eric Mun, Lee Min Woo and Kim Dongwan, all of whom dabble in acting.

excerpt 2:
To cope with the shrinking supply of charismatic hunks, the industry is training new actors and encouraging singers and models to cross over to acting. Shinhwa members embarked on solo acting projects, while the boys from newer groups like TVXQ and Super Junior also made sure to make their mark in a few dramas or films.

excerpt 3:
Shinhwa's Eric, 29, probably agrees, since he reportedly gave up his US citizenship to serve the Korean army. He and his Shinhwa pals are expected to enlist after they complete their ongoing world tour.
