[08.05.14][trans] Kim Dongwan: My way of life is in my music

Stumbling through his teens. Becoming an entertainer to make a living. Gaining popularity in his 20s. This is how Kim Dongwan has spent his last 10 years as a member of Korean's longest-running idol group. He has grown from a naive trainee to an accomplished singer/actor in these 10 years, and having just released his 2nd solo album, he is due to enlist for the army this year. Kim Dongwa talks to us about his 20s and Shinhwa's 10 years.

t: You just had your first performance for your 2nd solo album, how did you feel?

DW: I was more nervous than I was for the 1st album. I feel more pressure. The title track this time is a dance track, and I'm not much of a dancer to start with. Even at the moment before I stepped up on stage, I was still asking myself if this was right for me. At that point Jinnie, who was also on the same show, encouraged me and cheered me on, that's how I managed to get through with the performance.

t: But Shinhwa has always been known for their impressive stage performances, and here you are saying that you can't dance (laughs). The choreography for your title track Bi Mil (Secret) looks less complicated than Shinhwa's dances.

DW: Me and Hyesungie are always fighting to be the worst dancer in Shinhwa. Singing Bi Mil and dancing at the same time, it's really difficult. For Shinhwa, we're always practicing and the 6 of us are dancing together so it's not too bad, but to be honest, it's been very tough for me for 9 years.

"Actually I'm a little chauvinistic. I show it through music."

t: People's opinions of Kim Dongwan seem to differ from what you think of yourself. For the song 사이키스 (Psy Kiss), some people said the melody sounded similar to trot. Even some of your fans asked, "What happened to Kim Dongwan?" (laughs)

DW: That was actually one of the songs shortlisted to be the title track. (laughs) I wanted to do something completely different. But people who don't like this would probably say something like "What's up with this?", so I decided against it. Althought this song doesn't quite fit in with the other songs on the album, but I like it. Maybe I'm getting older. (laughs)"

t: So you're saying that you'd like to do what you want.

DW: Yes, I want to try working on music that I like. Honestly speaking, in my 1st solo album, I wasn't really sure of what I wanted and what I wanted people to hear, so I tried out everything. But this time round I did what I wanted to, so in the 2nd album you can hear more of a live band arrangement for most of the songs.

t: Especially on your vocal style. You had more of a polished style for the 1st album, but for the 2nd album there's a feeling of raw power.

DW: During the 1st album I'd stop singing if my voice was hoarse, this time round I'd still sing even if that's the case. Actually I ended up liking this style more. Especially on A Man's Love, I specially sang it with a hoarse voice.

t: We're all curious as to how you're really like. In A Man's Love, there's a line that goes something like "No one really knows a man's heart/He dies holding someone/That day he smiled", is that the way it is now? (laughs)

DW: I'd only be that way to the woman I love. I'm a little of a male chauvinist, but I don't mean it in the sense of belittling women. That's something only bad guys do. It's more of a way of life. Although it might be the same for women, but men tend to hide their emotions and try to get on with life. That shows in my music, because that's how I live.

"I seem to become an ahjosshi when I'm doing my solo activities"

t: What is it that you have to hide? You once talked about your thoughts on the movie "If I Was Superman", you said Jeon Ji Hyun "played the character of a female PD who tries her best in all her programmes in order to survive very well."

DW: Male PDs seem to have a knife hidden in their hearts (meaning that they are aggressive but they would put on a front) But they would put on a smile and try to get along with everyone. Female PDs tend to be more serious and they don't really show their humorous side. I think they are trying to show their strength because they believe that's their key to survival. That's my opinion.

t: Do you carrry a knife in your heart too?
DW: Of course, I can be an angel in front of people I really dislike, but sometimes I wonder to myself when I'd be able to stab him with the knife. In the entertainment world, I've suffered many insults, especially during the time I was filming the drama. I thought of giving up acting then. But I gritted my teeth and persisted anyway. My motto since high school has been "If you can't even tolerate this as a man, you might as well be dead." I think one's tolerance level is directly related to the level of success he achieves.

t: But don't you feel worse as you try to tolerate more?

DW: I rationalize too much. Because I'm an entertainer, I can't act this way. Because I'm kind, I can't act this way. I'd be asked not to make mistakes. But to be frank, one would make mistakes even during a break. Even so, the members will help me out. I would feel that I have to put up with something, but then Eric would tell me to let it all out. Having people like him around helps me a lot.

t: Shinhwa's Kim Dongwan is a very fun-loving guy, is the solo Kim Dongwan like that too?

DW: As part of Shinhwa, I'd go about the activities without worrying much, but it's the opposite for the solo Kim Dongwan. As part of Shinhwa, it feels like i'm having fun with my friends, but I seem to become an ahjosshi during my solo activities because I can truly feel the reality of it all.

"I'd like to lead an ordinary life during military service."

t: Reality of it all?

DW: The fact that I'm getting older, and my status as an entertainer.

t: Was it the same for you when you made your acting debut? I heard that you were under a lot of pressure when Spin Kick didn't do well at the box office. It must have been very different from your experience with Shinhwa.

DW: There was really a lot of pressure. I picked up drinking and smoking after quitting it for 5 years. I hoped that everyone could see a different side of me, but that didn't happen. I didn't act in any more dramas after The Person I Love, because I want to be able to show a completely different side of me when I do return to acting. And not just in terms of appearance, but in terms of being able to let the audience identify with me.

t: What stresses you out most about performing?

DW: As a teenager, I had the opportunity to experience everything earlier than most people, and that helped me a great deal in terms of performing in my 20s. However I haven't been able to live a normal life since I hit my 20s. So I hope that I can lead an ordinary life during my military service. I'd like to see what I've become after experiencing so much.

t: Maybe that's why you seem to be enjoying a break after 10 years. I've seen your diary entries, you no longer seem to expressing your opinions so strongly anymore. You sound more relaxed and at peace.

DW: That's true. When I write, I'm as peaceful as when I'm fishing. 3 to 4 years ago, I would be writing about social problems, but I don't do that anymore. My focus is more on my own life now.

t: Have you also changed your opinion about Shinhwa too? Your perspective seems to be different when you were active as Shinhwa.

DW: On the whole, Shinhwa completely belongs to us now. During the SM days, Shinhwa was a 100% manufactured group, but now at least 90% come from ourselves. To me now Shinhwa is... I used to say that it's everything, now it's not anymore. Shinhwa's still family to me, but there is also more than that to life.

t: Now that you're all having your own solo careers, do you feel that it's a pity that Shinhwa isn't as active as before? The fans are still waiting eagerly to see Shinhwa's performances. The title track for the 9th jib is a dance track, won't you be performing that on programmes?

DW: It's not just because of our solo activities that we're not going on programmes. In fact, I'm also worried that it's so difficult to be as active as before as a group. We will need a lot of time to be able to have that many activities, but each of us can't afford that much time, and we have to consider things from a commercial perspecitve. We'd rather perform for the fans during concerts. There are many restrictions on TV programmes, and if we wanted to make a group appearance we'd have to turn up on many programmes, not just a few. So we chose to concentrate on our concert rehearsals instead.

t: Does Shinhwa also signify something different now? I've always felt that Shinhwa is a group that works hard for the fans, and not to gain popularity.

DW: Some people say that idols are just making money off the fans. But it's really something to be able to survive because of the fans. If we're purely using the fans to make money then we'd be really bad guys, but we work hard for them. They're the ones who give us their undivided attention when we're on stage, and they're the ones who shower us with love. We want to be on the same side with the fans, since we're an idol group after all. It might be boring to be a group that everyone likes, so we hope to be a group that people like from time to time, but they'd be happy each time they see us. We want to be able to like ourselves and for the fans to love us too.

t: What's the next step for you and Shinhwa then?
DW: It will be great if Shinhwa can stand on stage together and carry on holding concerts. We would be back together again latest by the time we're 35, and we should be able to carry on performing after that. For me, I've spent too much time worrying during my 20s. I didn't know what people expected out of me, so I tried my hand at everything. Now I have a clearer idea as to what's expected of me and what I'm good at. Although some people might laugh, but now that I'm stepping into my 30s, life has just begun.

t: What kind of relationship would you hope to have with the fans who have stayed with you for the past 10 years, and who are most likely to continue supporting you in future?

DW: A relationship of complete trust. I said something like that during my 1st volume. I've also said before that people who give me constructive criticism are better than people who like everything about me unconditionally, and that I hated it when I was obviously doing something wrong and yet people still cheer me on. But now I like people who support me all the way, that's because I understand myself now and I know what I should be doing. If you don't like me or the things I do, just don't attend my performances or visit my site (laughs). Now I like people who cheer me on.

[08.05.13][diary] Andy: Propose~~

Hi everyone! This is the first entry I've written since I started activities for the new song... Sorry —. —

How's the song Propose? Just like the lyrics~ I'd like to invite everyone and treat everyone to spaghetti... Looks like my house has to be big enough to accommodate everyone^^

Erm.. Recently.. Because of the programme, there seems to be many people who feel hurt, and they're upset with me sometimes... What should I say to everyone to make it better...

Before I started my solo activities, I promised to meet everyone via TV programmes. When I do recording for the programmes, I'd think of people on the programme as all of you.

Although I don't know if this can help clarify anything... I hope everyone will not get upset with me or misunderstand me, because of the things I do on the programme~

I'm very grateful for everyone's opinions, criticisms etc, and I'm trying to improve myself based on that.

I'll be working hard on my activities for Propose... And I'm preparing hard for the Japan concert in June, I hope everyone will look forward to it~
(During the concert, what songs should I use to present a whole new stage... Troubled. Isn't everyone curious??)

Ah, I heard about the big earthquake in China... I'm worried about the fans in China. I'm praying for everyone.

[08.05.12][trans] How Much? Stars and Their Fan Clubs

The ever reliable support army of the stars - Fanclubs! Stars exist because of them! Having started off as the "oppa squads", fanclubs are no longer exclusive to teenage girls - fanclubs of nuna squads, ahjumma squads, ahjosshi squads etc are all being set up, and grow from strength to strength. "Stars' Lifestyle - How Much?" will go into an exploration of the larger fanclubs, whose organizational structures do not pale in comparison to management companies.

(non-relevant info omitted)

As the scale of fanclubs grow, their organizational strengths grow as well. Although they are in essence just a group of like-minded individuals who share the same love for a particular artiste or group, they are extremely influential. They may seem like any other members of the audience, but once the performances start, one would be able to identify them right away. If green-colored balloons start to surface, you'd know that SS501 is present - their fanclub members amount to 115,000; and if blue-colored balloons are seen, Super Junior is in the house - their fanclub members amount to 62,000. And if you see the audience area slowly turning orange, longest-running group Shinhwa is about to make their appearance - the size of their fanclub Shinhwa Changjo sets the benchmark of all benchmarks with a whopping 216,000 members!

[08.05.12][news] Master Chef Andy - #1 choice for a groom

Shinhwa member and now solo singer Andy showed off his impressive culinary skills and has been dubbed as the #1 choice for a groom, as he moved the hearts of female viewers.

On the May 11 broadcast of MBC's We Got Married, Andy personally whipped up a meal to welcome Solbi's parents for a visit. Solbi and viewers alike were all impressed by his culinary skills, which were comparable to a professional.

And as for how Andy picked up his skills, he said, "I'd watch and learn whenever my mom's cooking". He was preparing pancakes, vegetables and seafood all at the same time, leading Solbi to exclaim, "I think I really married the perfect guy."

Looking at Andy who was concentrating on making the meal, Solbi couldn't help but hug the lovable Andy from the back, saying "Andy's really a person whom you want to understand more as you get familiar with him."

At the end of the segment, Solbi's parents arrived at the couple's home, and the nervous Andy greeted them as Solbi's dad called out "An-sobang~ (*sobang - son-in-law)", leaving the viewers with more to look forward to in the next episode."

On MBC's Show! Music Core on May 10, as a surprise, Andy sang his latest song 'Propose' to Solbi who was MC for the show, and gave her roses as well. And on SBS Quiz! Sixth Sense shown the following day, Andy once again sang to her. Viewers are now wondering if their reel-life relationship has spilled over to real life as well.

[08.05.12][news] Andy: I've had 2 girlfriends...they're both married now

"Don't you like Solbi?"
"Hahaha"

Their conversation starts with Solbi. Andy and Solbi play a newlywed couple in MBC's We Got Married, and more and more viewers are starting to hope that they will become an item in real life too. Friends of Andy are all saying that they want to "matchmake" the two of them. In response to DJ Choi Hwa Jung saying "Just date Solbi and see how it goes", Andy laughs.

Shinhwa's Andy, becoming a solo singer for the first time in 10 years with "Love Song". At the same time, his popularity has soared due to his appearances on variety shows. After appearing in dramas he is also being recognized as a musical actor. DJ Choi Hwa Jung meets Andy at a cafe in Gangnam on a sunny May afternoon for a chat.

"If Solbi possesses the qualities that I'm looking for in a girl, then I'll date here."

CHJ: Let's talk a little more about this. Do you like Solbi, or you don't?

Andy: No particular special feelings

CHJ: You two look compatible.... Don't you find her cute? She has an enthusiastic side but she has her quiet side too. How did you find Solbi the first time you met her?

Andy: I was quite nervous during our first filming session. Solbi wears her heart on her sleeve, and I was thinking of how I should act in order not to hurt her in any way. But as I got to know her better I realised that she's quite a smart person.

CHJ: Solbi likes Andy the best in Shinhwa.

Andy: Ah no, that's not true. It should be Eric hyung. She always ends her sentences with "Eric oppa". Everything she starts talking about Eric hyung I just feel like dying.

CHJ: Even if that's the case, you'd eventually have some feelings for each other given that you keep seeing each other. Haven't you ever felt anything for Solbi at all?

Andy: ... I have.

CHJ: Solbi said before that "If Andy oppa is ok with it, I'd really want to date him". What do you say to this?

Andy: She's kidding... Although I don't know how my heart will change in the future, but at the moment we're still getting to know each other better

CHJ: Don't you have the intention to date during the process of knowing each other better?

Andy: If Solbi possesses the qualities I look for in a girl, I would want to. I'm quite conservative, so I don't like girls to drink. And she must be able to take care of the people around her. I can't say definitely what's the type I'm looking for.

"I can't have a girl paying."

CHJ: The Shinhwa members haven't really had any scandals before. Although you can say that's a good thing, but isn't it a little boring?

Andy: I'm not exactly popular. Although I attend birthday parties or gatherings, but I don't really talk to girls or sing in front of the guests. Although I'd like to start conversations with the girls, I just can't do it.

CHJ: Then you can't even say hello to the girl you like? Is there a reason why you can't chat girls up?

Andy: Before Shinhwa's 2nd jib I still took the subway wherever I went. One day I met a girl I really like, and I picked up my courage, walked over and said hello, but the girl just ran off! Although I wanted to catch up with her, I didn't.

CHJ: You should have just went after her

Andy: If you want to describe my personality, I'm someone who'd watch TV at home, if I see a really pretty female celeb I'd think to myself 'wow she's really pretty, I'd really like to date her'. But then again, the girl might end up being involved in a scandal with someone else, then I'd end up moping at home eating and drinking soju by myself.

CHJ: Then haven't you had any girlfriends before?

Andy: Two, one before my debut and one after my debut. But both them are already married now.

CHJ: Did they share any similiarities?

Andy: They were the type to take the initiative in everything they do. I always felt that girls who work hard at what they do are the most beautiful.

CHJ: During the times when you were dating, were there any moments when you didn't have enough money?

Andy: I can't have girls paying up. When Shinhwa was just starting out I wasn't really familiar with branded labels. There was one day we were at this branded boutique and I thought the item cost about 100,000won so I wanted to get it for her, but then I realised it was much more than that. I got a shock and I had to borrow a charge card from our manager, and the company card at that.

CHJ: Shinhwa members used to go to clubs together. I heard that only you didn't get recognized.

Andy: That was during the 5th jib. I wasn't part of the 4th jib, so when we did the shoot for the 5th jib we just went together. But I was the only one who didn't get recognized, in fact I was even mistaken for the club manager. In the end I just sat there and finished the drinks by myself.

"A normal, shy student."

CHJ: How did you get discovered for Shinhwa?

Andy: I was just a regular kid when I was in school. In the US, when our school had special events, me and Tony hyung would perform these impersonations of foreign singers. That's how I got discovered.

CHJ: Were you a very cautious person then?

Andy: Yes, very cautious. Very shy, very uncomfortable around strangers.

CHJ: I heard you were supposed to be a H.O.T member, what happened?

Andy: My parents were against it then.

CHJ: H.O.T did very well right from their debut, weren't you envious?

Andy: I was. I really envied their success.

CHJ: Did you believe that Shinhwa would make it big?

Andy: No actually. I was very young when we made our debut, not even old enough to drink yet. After our 1st jib, our manager talked to us over drinks, and discussed our future plans if our 2nd jib didn't succeed. But T.O.P and our 2nd jib did very well in the end.

"I was very troubled over the nasty comments about my solo activities."

CHJ: Who's the most handsome out of the Shinhwa members? Do you feel like you've learned a lot from your hyungs?

Andy: Each of them has their good points. Eric hyung's charisma; Minwoo hyung's charisma and showmanship on stage; Dongwan hyung always has interesting things to say; Hyesung hyung has a great voice. Of course they have their flaws too, so I wouldn't pick those up from them (laughs) Jin hyung is very talented and witty.

CHJ: Then what about you would they imitate?

Andy: Aegyo? Hahaha

CHJ: Which member do you get along the best with?

Andy: Eric hyung. We've knew each other since we were studying in the US, it's been 16 years. So we know each other very well.

CHJ: Did your first solo album meet your own definition of success?

Andy: Initially there wasn't much of a response, and I got quite worried. I read on the Internet many comments such as "Why are you releasing an album, just stick to variety show appearances", "Can you really sing?". Although I tried to appear that I was fine, but I really drank a lot of soju by myself at home.

CHJ: But "Love Song" became very popular

Andy: When the song first came out, comments were like "Just look at this" and other negative comments, and I was in a panic. I was troubled by what I should do to improve everyone's opinions.

"As long as she is understanding and can take care of the people around her, ok."

CHJ: What kind of girls do you like?

Andy: Intellectual, and persevering. At the same time she must be understanding and be able to take care of the people around her.

CHJ: Then looks and figures don't matter to you?

Andy: I'd be lying if I said they don't. I'd look at appearances too, but rather than to say that I like pretty girls, I would say I prefer girls who are focused on what they are doing, that makes them attractive.

CHJ: How about me?

Andy: I've been wanting to meet you in person. I heard that you're very close to Dongwan hyung. When I finally got to meet you I was very surprised that you look so young. You don't look like you're 40. Where did you get your injections? (laughs)

CHJ: No I didn't, they don't come this natural. So I'm not pretty?

Andy: I don't know how to say things like that.

CHJ: Haha, you just won't say it. Then, am I prettier, or is Solbi prettier?

Andy: I don't know hahaha

They had a very pleasant conversation. The usually shy and reticent Andy opened up to Choi Hwa Jung and shared his innermost thoughts. Even Andy's manager said, "It's the first time I've seen him say this much."

After meeting Andy...

There tends to be a lot of prejudices towards celebrities, especially idol celebrities. In actual fact there are some celebrities with some issues with their characters, but there are many honest and innocent ones too. Andy belongs to the latter category. He doesn't have a hidden private life, and he remains innocent and kind. He took part in the 8 May Father's Day edition of Choi Hwa Jung's Powertime - and on that show, we saw in Andy a filial son, the burden of being the head of the household, and a young man who worries about his parents all the time. Compared to some other idol stars who live the high life and drive fancy cars, Andy shows us a conscientious, honorable side to him.
