[10.10.04] Consolidated news about Eric and the drama “Love Song”

There are conflicting reports about Eric taking up the lead role (originally for the late Park Yong Ha) alongside Yoon Eun Hye in the drama “Love Song”. Top Class had refuted the rumors that arose sometime last month, saying that the production company was trying to create buzz for the drama, but it seems that these casting rumors are resurfacing. Top Class has not commented on this round of rumors, so let’s just stay tuned for updates. There’s a 3rd article in Sports Chosun which I won’t translate, that basically says that both actors are in serious discussions about taking up the drama.

Eric and Jo Hyun Jae to fill in for Park Yong Ha in “Love Song”

Hallyu stars Eric and Jo Hyun Jae are set to replace the late Park Yong Ha in the drama “Love Song”. Eric is currently serving his military duty as a public service officer and will be discharged on 22 Oct. (Note: There has apparently been a mistake made by Seoul Metro on his discharge date – it should be 30 Oct). Jo Hyun Jae had already been discharged from military service back in June this year. Both actors have selected “Love Song” as their comeback project.

Eric and Jo Hyun Jae have recently reached a basic agreement with the production company behind “Love Song”. Verdi Media is already in discussions with broadcasters for scheduling slots, on the basis on the cast of Yoon Eun Hye, Eric and Jo Hyun Jae. “Love Song” was initially slated for broadcast on KBS, but Park Yong Ha’s untimely passing led to a delay in production and broadcast schedules. The inclusion of Eric and Jo Hyun Jae looks set to kickstart the drama smoothly.

A rep from Verdi Media said, “Eric and Jo Hyun Jae are both Hallyu stars and will fill the void left behind by Park Yong Ha. Once the broadcast dates are confirmed, shooting can commence when Eric is discharged.”

Choi Byung Min, director of Top Class Entertainment, which manages Eric, said, “Although we have yet to officially sign the contract, we have agreed to his appearance, in order to facilitate discussions for broadcast schedules. Once the schedule has been confirmed, only then will we start concrete discussions about his appearance”, taking a careful stance of confirming his appearance only after the schedules have been fixed.

“Love Song” is a drama based on the 1997 Hong Kong hit film, “Comrades, Almost A Love Story” (Tian Mi Mi). The drama had already been presold to 11 countries in Asia, banking on the popularity of its Hallyu star leads Park Yong Ha and Yoon Eun Hye. Park Yong Ha’s passing caused a disruption to production and also ignited worries about possible negative effects on the Hallyu wave. However with Eric and Jo Hyun Jae coming onboard, these effects are likely to be mitigated.

Yoon Eun Hye’s “Love Song” meets with difficulty
Eric’s reps: “Already declined the role” / Jo Hyun Jae’s reps: “Yet to be confirmed”

It’s rough seas ahead for the drama “Love Song”, based on the 1997 Hong Kong film, “Comrades, Almost A Love Story” (Tian Mi Mi), starring Leon Lai and Maggie Cheung. The drama had already received much attention when the late Park Yong Ha was cast as the drama’s male lead.

Yoon Eun Hye was later cast as the female lead, but production was halted due to Park Yong Ha’s sudden passing and difficulty in casting a new male lead.

The production company is now scouring for a replacement for Park Yong Ha, and especially since the drama has been marketed as a Hallyu star vehicle, the production company is taking extra care to select a Hallyu star.

Candidates who have received proposals include Eric, who’s due to be discharged from military service on 30 Oct, and Jo Hyun Jae.

In an interview with Star News on 4 Oct, Eric’s rep have expressed that they have “already rejected the offer”. The rep explained, “Although we have received the proposal, but we have rejected it after considering the role and other factors. He’ll be discharged soon and has already received several offers for projects. His comeback project will be confirmed soon.”

Jo Hyun Jae’s rep expressed, “Although we have received the proposal, we have yet to decide whether to take up the role or not. We’re looking at several options now, and cannot comment on ‘Love Song’ just as yet.”
