The Shinhwa members who have been in showbiz for 10 years are all very different from each other. They all have their strengths in different fields, be it in music, acting or variety. Among the Shinhwa members, Shin Hyesung is the only one without a sideline. He smiles and says, "The thing I'm best at, the thing that I really want to do, is only singing."
With the current trend of releasing mini albums and digital singles as opposed to full albums, Shin Hyesung is releasing his 3rd album in 2 parts. Although the costs and efforts are doubled as a result, he scratches his head and says, "I want to show the new and improved me. Releasing two parts of an album within 1 year, that may not seem very humble but I'm proud of it."
His 3rd album forms the stage where he transforms himself. Going from being Shinhwa's main vocalist and the balladeer that we all know, Shin Hyesung has attempted rock for his new album, and also alt-rock, Britrock, swing and disco. At the same time, he has his concerns.
"I let Shin Seung Hoon senior hear my demo, and he didn't respond for a moment. He looked at me and told me that it was good, but asked for the reason behind the sudden change. I did think for a moment if my decision was wrong."
Side 1 - Live And Let Live features the Vink track Because Of You, and also other musicians like Wheesung, Yurisangja's Park Seung Hwa and Wanted's Kim Jae Suk. Park Seung Hwa wrote the track Promise, on which he duets with Hyesung. N.E.X.T also featured in a live performance of Because Of You.
Having cemented his fanbase with his 1st and 2nd albums in 2005 and 2007, why did he suddenly decide to change?
"The people around me did advise me, they told me that it could be risky and that it was going to be stressful. But I want to show that there's more to music than ballads, and I want to prepare myself for the goals that I want to achieve in my music."
Since the beginning of this year, Shin Hyesung only collected non-ballad tracks for the album. From the intro track Live And Let Live until the last track, the instrumental track of Because Of You, there are a total of 12 tracks in the album. The album changes from lively and upbeat, to a grand waltz beat.
"I want everyone, after they've heard the whole album, to feel that they've just watched a movie. I even argued with the production team over the time gap between each song, whether it should be 1 or 2 seconds. (laughs)"
The album title Live And Let Live, roughly translates to "Leave me alone, I'll do as my heart pleases."
"There are many staff members and colleagues who still need to make a living. Although it's supposed to be 'I'll do as my heart pleases", I can't do that. For me it's like I just returned from a musical journey. I'm satisfied, and I'm in high spirits."
