[08.08.05][news] Shin Hyesung: Rock music suits me too

New album will include genres like rock and disco

"Get the feel, get the rhythm. Good, let's try it again...." Vink says, as he goes through his song with Shin Hyesung, who is currently recording his 3rd solo album in Daechi-dong, Seoul.

After the 10th anniversary concert in March, fans have seen all other 5 members busy with their own solo projects, except for Shin Hyesung.

The songs in the 3rd album are rather different from his trademark ballads such as Same Thought and First Person. The album contains more upbeat tracks of the alternative rock and disco. He is now trying out different genres in order to find the style that suits him best. In an interview with Yonhap News, Shin Hyesung said, "It seems that ballads suit me best, but I hope to expand my range and let everyone see a different side of me. In the process I realised that rock music suits me well too."

"I hope that this new attempt will help me to ease through different types of genres in future. Now I can better understand my strengths and what I'm capable of, so fans can still accept the music I have on the album. I'm not changing for the sake of following trends, it's just that I have higher expectations for my own music."

"Nothing is difficult for those who try, so even if I don't do well because of the change in style, I won't be worried about releasing the next album. I have confidence in myself."

Shin Hyesung's 2nd album focused mainly on ballads, and he says he doesn't want look back after the 7th, 8th albums and ask himself "why did I release an album like that".

For a ballad singer to move into dance pop, the change is more significant. Shin Hyesung says he hopes to establish a style that is distinct from that of Shinhwa's, thus the conscious decision to avoid having his fellow Shinhwa members feature on his solo albums.

"Generally people feel that it's easier being a ballad singer than a dance singer. I hope to increase my skills in songwriting, and I do hope to become a singer-songwriter eventually."

Last year, Shin Hyesung took his solo tour to Japan, where he gave performances in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya.

"I feel a sense of pride when all 6 of us stand on stage as Shinhwa. For my solo performances I do feel a little more pressured since there's no one to help me out, but the sense of achievement is greater in this case. On my first trip to Japan I was worried how I was going to cope with holding 4 concerts on consecutive days. Now I'm more confident about it, and the concert will be very interesting."

The other 5 Shinhwa members will enlisting one by one, and this means that Shinhwa will be on hiatus for the next few years. Now Shin Hyesung is even more driven to work hard on his solo work. "In order for us to amass the strength for our comeback, we all have to get somewhere with our solo careers first."

With many singers making their comebacks in the 2nd half of the year, the music industry has termed this period as "The Time of Death". Shin Hyesung says he's looking forward to this period that will showcase different styles of music from the different artists.

"Just being known by the public isn't enough for me, I still have a long way to go. I hope to be able to learn from the seniors and juniors who will be releasing their albums in the second half of the year. As a singer, I have my own goals."
