“Gentle” singers Lee Seung Gi and Andy become troublemakers

The proper boy with model behaviour – Lee Seung Gi – plays a haughty chaebol heir Sunwoo Hwan in ‘Brilliant Legacy’, while romantic and sentimental Andy plays a loafer who insists on keeping up appearances. From singers to actors, they portray characters who act completely opposite of their images for the sake of doing well in their roles, and this is a step in their transformation process.

Lee Seung Gi plays Sunwoo Hwan in ‘Brilliant Legacy’, a character that defies every part of his existing image. He said, “Because the difference between my image and the character is really maximum, it seems that the viewers are curious and they find it interesting.”

Of course there was some suffering at the beginning due to the controlled pace. On his 180-degree change from the existing image of Lee Seung Gi, there were comments from viewers such as, “It’s like he’s wearing clothes that don’t fit him” and that he couldn’t conceal his sense of awkwardness. He said, “The viewers’ sobering assessment made me re-analyse the character. The troublemaking but clumsy Sunwoo Hwan, slowly gives away his cute yet emotional side.” The result is a great success, giving Lee Seung Gi a taste of success, with his first drama in which he’s the male lead, garnering ratings of more than 30%.

On playing Sunwoo Hwan, Lee Seung Gi said, “I hope I can be viewed in a different light, that there’s a possibility of me being an actor.”

Andy has also undergone a successful transformation with his role as Yoon Nam Joon in ‘Two Wives’. Although he doesn’t own much material wealth, neither is he capable, he insists on keeping up with appearances all the way and is somewhat insensible and immature.

Andy’s first scene in the drama was when he returned to Korea a penniless man after getting conned of his money, with his shabby appearance giving viewers a refreshing surprise.

His management company has expressed great satisfaction at the results. “There wasn’t a special intention to change his image, it’s just he received an offer for the project, which he happened to like, that’s why he agreed to take part in the drama. There are numerous differences between the image he has and his drama character, and in the end he achieved a successful transformation. “I had the thought of wanting to give it my best shot”, and it seems that the viewers are aware of that too. “Because I’m the youngest member in Shinhwa, my maknae image has left a very deep impression on everyone. Now I hope to let everyone see me as a man.”
