[08.11.05][trans] M: Please don't dismiss it as idols' music before hearing it (1/4)

It seems that the name of M is getting more and more suitable for singer Lee Minwoo (28). As M the solo singer, Lee Minwoo has been working on his solo career for the past 5 years. 1 year and 3 months after his 3rd album, he has released his 4th album M RIZING.

Lee Minwoo's 4th album feels like a gift set that consists of many different genres and unique touches, that are distinctly M's style. One can feel that his music has become more and more polished as time passes.

"Singers need to constantly revamp themselves, that's what I believe. That's why I've tried my hand at different genres. Everytime I have an idea, I'd record it down and I'll compile all the memos, melody clips and beats before working on producing the track."

The popular title track Don't Trust Men was written by his good friends Brave Brother, who also produced hits like Big Bang's Last Greeting, Fool; Brown Eyed Girls' How Come; and Son Dambi's Crazy.

Although this time his title track is written by someone other than himself, Lee Minwoo has still written 8 out of the 12 tracks on the album. He has already proved his lyric-writing skills with Jewelry's hit songs Superstar and One More Time.

"I was quite troubled over which song to use as the title track, and it's a little sad to hear comments on how it sounds like Taeyang's Look Only At Me. But it will be a big mistake to judge this album just by listening to Don't Trust Men.

With digital singles and mini-albums being the trend these days, it is a surprise to see Lee Minwoo sticking to a full album, because as part of an idol group, he would be more sensitive to trends more than anyone else.

"Looking at the state of the music industry now, production costs should technically be kept to a minimum. Even out of a full album, only a title track and follow-up track will be needed for album promotional activities, so it's not necessary to have a full album after all. Although a mini-album will be more effective and efficient in this sense, I don't want to be sticking to a trend. So I decided that I had to release a full album with quality and structure at least for the fans who listen to my music."

Lee Minwoo has spent the most time and effort on his vocals and the music arrangement. He thinks about the stage performance before producing the songs. This is something he picked up during Shinhwa's domestic and overseas performances. As a solo singer, even more songs with stage performances are required. Spectacular dance choreography is also a must. Lee Minwoo believes that a singer has to shine during a performance.

"I was more laidback during the production of the 4th album. I was a little shocked to see that the number of male fans have increased, and I was very happy to see good ratings and comments for the music arrangement."

Lee Minwoo has been active as M for 5 years now, but he feels a little disheartened when people still think of him as only idol group Shinhwa's Lee Minwoo.

"Before even listening to my music, people would say, "This is idol-type music released by Shinhwa's Lee Minwoo." But of course there are cases where they become fans when they listen to the songs and find that the music is actually very different. Every song has its own unique qualities, so please listen to the entire album before rating it."

To Lee Minwoo, music is his soul, something that he has given everything to, and his reason for living. He is at his happiest when he is onstage performing.
