[08.12.11] Shin Hyesung “Live And Let Live” in Japan - concert report

After releasing his 3rd album in August 2008, and holding his first Japan fanmeeting in September, Shin Hyesung has gone on to hold a sellout concert in Seoul in October, a fanmeeting, and concerts in Japan and China as part of his Asian tour.

Now active as a solo singer instead of Shinhwa, this is Shin Hyesung the artist. Taking a more experimental approach towards his music in the 3rd album, his concert performances have shown him to be an artist in every sense of the word.

The fans packed the concert venue, holding lightsticks in Shinhwa’s trademark orange color and in Shin Hyesung’s purple color, excitedly waiting for the concert to begin. Shin Hyesung finally took the stage and kicked off the concert with “Everything”.
Hyesung (in Japanese): Hi everyone, I’m Hyesung. I’d like to thank everyone for making it possible for me to hold my second concert in Tokyo. There are many people on the 2nd level too. This is the last night of the concert tour, let’s have an enjoyable time together!

Clad in a crisp white shirt and a jacket, Shin Hyesung seemed like he was feeling really warm and amidst the screams of the fans, as he was saying, “It’s hot, it’s hot”, he slid off his jacket.

Hyesung: We’ll start the last show now!

After singing “Island” and “I Luv You” from his 2nd album, his junior from the same management agency Sunmin took to the stage. Everyone expected them to perform the duet “Keep Holding U”, but instead they performed “A Good Day To Love” from Hyesung’s 3rd album.

Sunmin (in Japanese): Hi everyone, I’m Sunmin.
Hyesung (in Japanese): Hi everyone, I’m Hyesung

Having been active in Japan for 2 years and 9 months, Sunmin also greeted the audience in fluent Japanese.

Hyesung: Today it’s Sunmin’s 4th appearance as a guest at my concert, I’m really grateful for your help. You’ll be active in Korea from now on too, won’t you?
Sunmin: Erm? Erm… Although I’d like to… Hahaha…..Hahaha
Hyesung: ….Hahaha……???
Hyesung then handed the stage over to Sunmin, who wowed the audience with her impressive vocals.

After Sunmin’s guest performance, a short video story featuring Hyesung as a radio DJ was played. “A young female singer who performs at a cafe wants to confess her feelings to a regular customer, but lacks the courage to do so.” DJ Hyesung’s reply to this came in the form of two songs, the jazzy “Peter Pan’s Serenade”, followed by “Love Actually”.

Just when the fans enjoyed the adorable performances, Hyesung suddenly shouted, “Are you ready? ARE YOU READY?” And the club remix of “Center” came on, bringing the atmosphere to a climax! The choreography for the songs had changed too, taking on a more “club” concept.

Taking things a little slower, the members of the band, the guitarist, the drummer, the keyboardist and the 4 backup singers all gathered in the center of the stage, surrounding Hyesung. Hyesung was still perspiring profusely from the dance, amidst the cries of “oppa, oppa” from the fans.

Hyesung: I think there are fans older than me here, why is everyone calling me “oppa”?

At this point, the screams of “oppa” got even louder!

Hyesung: What oppa! (laughs) In Japanese, oppa means onisan, right? Ok, it’s Hyesung oppa. Onisan.

After a brief chat with the fans, Hyesung prepared for his next set. He said he had always liked the songs of Boyz II Men and Eric Claption very much, and with the beautiful accompaniment from the band, Hyesung picked out 3 of his favorite songs to perform.

The concert continued with a video that showed Hyesung’s activities in Japan so far. Although he may be an artist now, but he’s still very much part of the idol group Shinhwa. At the hotel, while the staff members were having a meeting, Hyesung danced alone at the side (Everyone cracked up when he stopped dancing to greet the staff who were done with the meeting). Everyone also saw how he goofed around in the car. The unseen footage was a great gift to the fans.

Hyesung made a grand appearance on a suspended platform for the last set of his concert! Performing the rock track, “Awaken”, followed by Seo Taiji & The Boys’ “Classroom Idea”, he momentarily turned the concert into a rock concert! It might have been surprising to see the ballad prince turn into a rocker, but the fans cheered along nonetheless.

After singing “Gift”, Hyesung said, “I’ll never forget today, thank you very much. “Because Of You” will be the last song.”

Fans thought the same as Hyesung for the encore. Yes! Singing along to “Same Thought”, Hyesung waved goodbye to the fans, and promised to return to Japan next year, and the concert drew to a emotional close.

However, the fans did not leave, and continued shouting “Shin Hyesung!” He eventually returned to the stage and thanked the band, staff, dancers and fans, and sang “Brand New” together with the fans, eventually ending the concert on a high note.
